Fall Leadership Meeting
Annual Membership Meeting

  November 2-4, 2011
    Mayflower Hotel
    Washington, DC

The World Affairs Councils of America (WACA), the largest national non-partisan network of local councils dedicated to educating the American public on global issues, held its flagship 2011 National Conference, US National Security: Six Top Issues for the 2012 Election.  Keynote speakers included Senator John McCain, (R-AZ); William J. Burns, Deputy Secretary of State; Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor; Senator Sam Nunn, Co-Chairman & CEO, Nuclear Threat Initiative; Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Adviser to President Jimmy Carter; Ambassador Marc Grossman, US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan; Joel Klein, Executive Vice President of News Corporation: Former Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education; Ambassador John D. Negroponte, Former Ambassador to Iraq and First Director of National Intelligence; and General Michael Hayden, Former Director of the CIA, NSA.  Richard C. Levin, President of Yale University, delivered the opening keynote speech on US Education: Competing Globally with moderator Stone Phillips, former Dateline NBC Anchor.

This 2011 conference for the WACA national network leadership publicly launched the World Affairs Councils of America’s year-long national discussion on the Six Top National Security Issues facing the United States in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election, which were selected by its council leadership from across the country. Concerned by the lack of attention that national security issues received in the mid-term election and by the historic global events of the past year, the World Affairs Councils of America committed, as a national network, to an election year discussion series in the over 90 communities its councils serve across the country.   In preparation for that effort, the World Affairs Councils leadership was asked to vote on the Six Top National Security Issues facing the United States in a March 2011 survey of the over 90 World Affairs Councils in 40 states.  The World Affairs council leaders selected US Education: Competing Globally as the number onenational security issue facing the United States today.  Also among the top 6 are: US Energy PolicyAfghanistan/PakistanUS Economic CompetitivenessMiddle East, and China.

The 2011 National Conference was generously sponsored by NATO, Thomson Reuters, Northrop Grumman, Chevron, Goldman Sachs, The Gambrinus Company, Raytheon, ExxonMobil, El Paso Corporation, Barclays Capital and the Hutchins Family Foundation.
