CONTEXT: Iran’s Surprising Election

With just about everyone expecting the need for a runoff, it came as a significant surprise when moderate presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani captured more than 50 percent of the vote. A late surge of enthusiasm and some key endorsements gave Rouhani the victory and seems to have given new life to Iran’s reform movement. Haleh Esfandiari, the Wilson Center’s Middle East Program Director, provides context.

CONTEXT is distributed in partnership with the World Affairs Councils of America. For more CONTEXT episodes, visit our Virtual Library.

Message Regarding World Affairs Councils of America Leadership

The World Affairs Councils of America and S. Todd Culpepper, the organization’s president, have announced that Mr. Culpepper is leaving the organization due to his desire to maintain residence in North Carolina with his young family and in light of the organization’s need for a full-time president to be on site in Washington, DC.

Mr. Culpepper has served the organization during a critical year and he plans to stay involved with the substantive policy issues that are of central concern to the World Affairs Councils of America and its network of over 90 councils across the United States.

"Americans are confronted every day with the opportunities and challenges of an interconnected world, making knowledge of world affairs more critical than ever,” Mr. Culpepper said.  “The World Affairs Council network plays a crucial role in engaging and educating the public around the country, and the Organization’s national office provides an active and vital presence in DC. I am honored to have played a role in advancing the mission of the organization, and to have worked with the many talented and dedicated people here who are determined to change the world for the better,” Mr. Culpepper said.

Ambassador Paula Dobriansky, Chair of the World Affairs Councils, stated: “We are all grateful to Todd for the hard work and dedication he brought to World Affairs Councils. He has played an important role and I know he will remain a strong supporter of the organization’s mission.”

The national board will be constituting a search committee for a new President and CEO. We are already taking steps to ensure that we have strong interim leadership and do not lose any momentum as we move toward what we expect will be another outstanding national conference in November.

WACA-U.S. Department of State Partnership

WACA is partnering with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to provide exciting opportunities for World Affairs Councils members and their families to promote relationships between the United States and other countries of the world. Enrich your family and community by joining our “C2C” - Culture2Culture, Country2Country and Community2Comunity initiative. Volunteer to host an international exchange student starting this fall.

Many people ask what they can do to make things better for themselves, their children, their communities, and the world.  By sharing your home and heart with an international high school exchange student, you will make a difference. What begins as an exchange of kindness, customs and culture within a family extends throughout a high school and community to touch thousands of lives. The Department of State needs host families from all over the U.S. – from large cities to small towns. If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting a student, please visit http://hosting.state.gov for more information and to fill out a short form so that a local representative can contact you.

"Not My Life": U.S. Awareness Campaign

The World Affairs Councils of America has received a grant from Carlson & The Carlson Family Foundation to bring attention to the critical issue of human trafficking and modern slavery. The program series will feature screenings of the documentary film Not My Life by Robert Bilheimer and Worldwide Documentaries in all participating council communities. More Information

Not My Life, directed by Oscar nominee Robert Bilheimer, probes the dark, hidden, and often unspeakable realities of human trafficking and modern-day slavery-- multi-billion dollar global industries that earn their profits, as the film's narration says, "on the backs and in the beds of our planet's youth." The film is part of a global awareness campaign on modern slavery. Watch the Trailer

Speaker Series with Diana Untermeyer

The World Affairs Councils of America, in collaboration with the Embassy of Qatar, is proud to announce an Engage America Speaker Series with Diana Untermeyer, author of Qatar: Sand, Sea and Sky. The series will be offered for up to 30 World Affairs Councils across the country.

Mrs. Untermeyer lived in Doha, the bustling capital of Qatar, from 2004-2007 while her husband Chase served as U.S. ambassador. Qatar: Sand, Sea and Sky gives an overview of Qatar's rich culture and history and documents its journey into modernity. Though small in size, Qatar's strategic location and natural gas wealth make it a rising economic and political power.

Breathtakingly illustrated by award-winning photographer Henry Dallal, Mrs. Untermeyer's personal narrative provides a unique perspective of this moderate Muslim country and the way it attempts to become modern and engaged with the world without losing its heritage. Future of Korea 2013-2014

We are pleased to announce continued collaboration with the Korea Economic Institute of America on the Future of Korea program series. The speaker program focuses on the economic and political situation on the Korean Peninsula as well as U.S.-Korea relations.

The centerpiece of the program is a panel discussion consisting of one representative each from the U.S. Department of State, the Korean Embassy, KEI, or other relevant institutions. The panel participants typically offer a general overview presentation (approximately 60-90 minutes in length), followed by a Q&A period. The speakers address political, security, economic and financial issues pertaining to the Korean Peninsula and U.S.-Korea relations.

All councils may submit expressions of interest; up to eight councils will be selected to participate. Councils interested in hosting need to send a completed Application Form to Althea Georgantas at ageorgantas@worldaffairscouncils.org by Wednesday, May 15.
