Washington, DC Council’s Successful Summer Institute

The World Affairs Council of Washington, DC held its annual Summer Institute on International Affairs—titled “Our World. Our Challenge.”—from June 20 to June 24, 2005. Over 60 middle and high school teachers from across the nation came together for the weeklong program. The Institute focused on three major themes —democracy and reform, terrorism/global threats, and world resources and demand - and featured a diverse host of speakers, including Hon. Thomas Pickering, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and Chairman of the American Academy of Diplomacy.

The Institute aims to offer teachers the knowledge and resources necessary to help their students better understand the world around them and the controversial issues that arise in an international setting. The conference gave teachers an insight into the most pressing and relevant international issues of our time and the tools to bring their experience back into classrooms around the nation.
