The World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) is an association of 90 independent organizations in 39 states and the District of Columbia that work to engage and educate Americans on international affairs and foreign policy. 3/3/2010 - The World Economy: To the Brink and Back is the theme of the 40th annual Central Illinois World Affairs Conference, March 26-27, 2010 sponsored by the Peoria Area World Affairs Council. This conference will address the impact of the global economic crisis on US foreign policy, the connection between crime and corruption on the global economy, and the inherent ties between the world economy and the local economy of Central Illinois. The keynote speakers will include Dr. Tom Barnett, author of The Pentagon's New Map; Doug Oberhelman, Vice Chairman of Caterpillar; and Daniel Altman, author of 24 Hours in the Global Economy. Congratulations to David Murdoch, Chairman of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany in Pittsburgh. Mr. Murdoch was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Cross of the Order of Merit) for his work in strengthening German-American relations.

Congratulations are also in order for Bill Wheelock, Co-Founder and President of the World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches. Mr. Wheelock is the recipient of Rotary International's "Paul Harris Fellow Award in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world."

The Columbus Council on World Affairs will host Michael G. Morris, Chairman, President & CEO of American Electric Power, to discuss "The Future of Global Climate Change & Global Energy" at the Hyatt Regency Columbus on March 9, 2010.

The World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C. is pleased to announce that the Honorable Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education, will be the keynote speaker for the Council's 30th Anniversary Global Education Dinner. Secretary Duncan will be honored with the International Affairs Award. Other distinguished honorees include: H.E. Ambassador Pierre Vimont, Ambassador of France to the United States, Distinguished Diplomatic Service Award; Dr. Steven Knapp, President, The George Washington University, Educator of the Year Award; Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google, Global Education Award; and Judy Woodruff, Senior Correspondent, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Global Communications Award. The event will take place at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel on March 10, 2010.

Registration is open for the Northern California Council's annual event: WorldAffairs2010: Innovative Leadership in the Face of Crises on March 11-12, 2010 in San Francisco. You can attend the two-day event, or join a special 3-day WAC Leadership Premium Program to Northern California, which in addition to the conference, includes a private luncheon at the Hoover Institution, Council leadership discussions, and a special visit to the world-class Asian Art Museum.

We must as a nation understand our place in this new world, because if we do not, some serious mistakes can be made.
