Ventura County Council Attracts Students with VISA Program

The World Affairs Council of Ventura County, California attracts college students with an innovative program called VISA (Very Important Student Award). The VISA program is a way for students to come to council programs at no cost.

The council has three directors from the local universities, Pepperdine, California Lutheran and California State ; Channel Island on their board. These board members encouraged the council to have more programs on their campuses and worked with the council to find ways to get more students involved in council programs.

The council created VISA membership cards and distributes them to university professors at the local universities. The professors were chosen based on what they teach. So professors of history, political science, government, journalism and others were given the VISA cards and asked to distribute them to their best students.

The program has been active for a year and between 70 -100 students have attended council programs. Students attend programs for free, but must pay the cost of the meal if they choose to eat. Two students who came to programs through the VISA program now work at the council. One is the volunteer Young Professional coordinator and the other is an intern working on a program series on Africa expected to take place next year between November 2005 and February 2006.

National Board Secretary Mimi Chapin Gregory Receives Award
National Secretary Mimi Chapin Gregory has been chosen as for the Outstanding Citizen's Award in Florida for Social Studies.  The award will be given in October by the Florida Council on Social Studies.

Foreign Policy Association Announces 2006 Topics
The 2006 topics* are: UN reform; Brazil; Human rights in the age of terrorism; The U.S. and Iran; Global health pandemics and security; Turkey; Energy resources; and China and India: partners or competitors *Specific titles and the topics order are subject to change* The 2006 briefing books will be available in January.

Pittsburgh Council Launches New Website
The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh launched a redesigned web site featuring easier navigation, a dynamic events calendar, on-line registration for events, and various international affairs resources. The new site also includes audio downloads from the council's weekly radio show, Pittsburgh Global Press Conference.
